Overwater Bungalows is one of Bora Bora’s claims to fame – and the Flat Fellas caught a glimpse of them!

The most famous type of hotel room in Bora Bora is an overwater bungalow.  The room is on stilts over the water, frequently over part of a coral reef.  People who have spent a night in one of the rooms say there is an area with a couch that has a glass floor.  You can look through it and see fish swimming underneath your room.

The rooms usually have an exit directly to the lagoon, where you can swim, as well as on to a wood boardwalk that connects the rooms back to land and the rest of the hotel or resort.

Flat Stanley and Flat Hal did not make it all the way from Vaitape, the community where our tenders docked, to the overwater bungalows we caught a glimpse of, but one of the parks we stopped at had a nice view of them.

Would you like to stay in a hotel room where you could look through the floor to see fish swimming in a lagoon?  A room with direct access to the lagoon so you could go swim any time during the day?  Have you ever heard of “reef safe sunscreen”?  The chemicals in many sunscreens can be harmful to things that live in the water, like reefs, so special sunscreens have been designed, to protect both the humans and the water life.
