Kona — the big island

There is a LOT to see and do in Hawaii.  On our day in Kona we walked around, enjoyed the warm weather, the sun was hot against our skin (except for the people who went further from the harbor and got rained on), and the waves crashed against the shore and splashed up on to the sidewalks.

The cruise ship uses smaller boats called tenders to bring passengers to shore when they can not tie up at a pier.  In Kona our tender dropped us off just feet from the little harbor Kamakahonu sits alongside.  This is the residence of King Kamehameha I of Hawaii.

Do you know much about King Kamehameha?  Do you know why he is famous among Hawaiians and in Hawaii?

If you want to learn more about King Kamehameha there is a lot of information online.  For instance, goHawaii.com shares: A great warrior, diplomat and leader, King Kamehameha I united the Hawaiian Islands into one royal kingdom in 1810 after years of conflict.

Our day started with lots of sunshine, but ended with the island hiding among the storm clouds, so it was a delight to sail off into the sunset, with another port waiting for us.
