There was talk at previous ports about the difference between black sand and white sand beaches, and what gives beaches their color, but Fakarava was the first beach Flat Stanley and Flat Hal ventured that at first glance looked more like a rock than a sand beach, and at second glance we realized it wasn’t rocks but size-able pieces of coral that had washed ashore, and in some cases been rolled and caressed by the surf for so long they appeared almost flat.

Sunset as we sailed away from Fakarava

The downside to sailing away from so many of these scenic ports at dinner
time is that Flat Stanley and Flat Hal saw countless amazing sunsets, but only
got pictures of a fraction of them. The percentage might best be described
as “more than it felt like, but less than they wanted”.

On this particular evening we were excused from the dining room for ten
minutes to quickly take pictures of the sunset. The interesting way the rays of
light were casting up into the sky is clearly visible in the selfie, but the other
picture has what could be mistaken for a spec of dust on the camera lens, but
was actually a star in the sky.
