Santa Marta, Colombia… doing a little homework before we arrive.

Colombia is a unitary presidential republic.
The United States has a federal presidential constitutional republic.

On the surface these sound very similar, but upon further investigation it looks like some of the differences are in where the checks and balances on the President are, how much of a role the Vice-President plays, and perhaps how much the President directly controls vs. delegating to others directly or closely under his supervision.

It also feels noteworthy that the United States puts Constitutional (as in the Constitution) in the name of our form of government, as a reminder of the importance of this document that both outlines that different branches of government and their powers, AND the rights of the people governed.

Santa Marta is a coastal city, which is part of how our cruise ship has selected it as a port of call, it is not however the capital. Do you know what the capital of Colombia is?

Can you find Santa Marta, and the Capital of Colombia on a map? (I had to look them up.)

We sailed from Fort Lauderdale, near Miami, to Santo Domingo, Dominican Republic, to Santa Marta… our location as I type is the blue dot in the water!)
