The Flat Fellas in Puerto Limon, Costa Rica

Located on the Caribbean Sea, Puerto Limon  provided Costa Rica with a shorter more direct shipping route to Spain and England before the Panama Canal was built, when Costa Rica was shipping their exports from the Pacific Ocean side of the country.  Cacao (the all important ingredient for chocolate,) and bananas are shipped around the world from here.

Cacao from on the tree, to broken open for the seeds to be removed, to opening a “fresh seed” to see the Cacao that (once dried, roasted and shelled) is turned into chocolate.

Also known as lipstick plant in Hawaii, achiote has seeds that, when crushed produce a red… face paint feels like the best description. If you wash it off in a few hours it doesn’t stain the skin. The longer it is on, the harder it is to wash off from what we could tell.
